Over the last two years, I have been working on a novel THE GHOSTS OF PINOS ALTOS. This past Labor Day I finished the second draft. It's a humorous fiction story with 103,135 words. I spent six years in New Mexico during the Great Recession. While my book and characters are fiction, details are drawn from real-life experiences with the New Mexico film industry, personal assistants, and stray lizards. THE GHOSTS OF PINOS ALTOS
In 2008, Cyrus Larson is scared to graduate college during one of the worst economic downturns since the Great Depression. He assumes his only hope is to gain a summer internship and earn a recommendation letter, however, doors are not opening. He takes an unconventional leap forward and leaves his small, Illinois town for an internship on a New Mexican farm. Unfortunately, it’s not what he thought and he runs in the middle of the night, falling asleep on the side of Highway 25 the next morning. He’s discovered by an eccentric college student named Syngen, who is late for a party and takes Cy along.
At the party, Cy meets Henry Blatt, a retired music store owner from Little Rock who is in Santa Fe to finish a novel. Henry hires Cy to be his personal assistant and promises a job recommendation at the end of summer.
Between helping Henry write a novel and learning what it means to be a personal assistant, Cy is entangled with a film production in town that has run into problems. The Ghosts of Pinos Altos stars the bewitching Kat Dixon, a veteran filmmaker, and Bailey Logan, an up-and-coming YouTube personality. While Bailey is looking for the next big thing, Kat is dealing with her past. Forty years prior, Kat and Henry were engaged but separated due to a practical joke gone wrong onset of a 1969 western. Now they have found each other again in New Mexico and a new adventure is just getting started.
